Another fine mess we’re getting into

8:27am Thursday 4th December 2008

It’s five years since we launched the Bin It For Bradford campaign with the aim of cleaning up the district’s streets. Sadly, although that campaign was successful in raising public awareness at the time, anyone who walks around the city and suburbs can’t help but conclude that the problem has returned – if it ever really went away. Bradford is clearly suffering from the British disease, which includes a tendency to drop litter.

Doing the right thing... on instinct

8:28am Wednesday 3rd December 2008

Having a go when criminals strike can be a very risky business. Warehouseman Derek Wilson discovered that after a colleague, Sam Szakacs, tried to prevent raiders driving off in a van with a television they had stolen from the men’s workplace. After Mr Szakacs intervened, the van was driven backwards and Mr Wilson was crushed between it and another vehicle.

The risk it’s just not taking

Bradford drivers can be a dangerous lot even when sober, as a police crackdown in the Great Horton Road area has shown. It’s a cause for considerable concern that during a ten-hour period, motorists in the streets around the University and college buildings were given a total of 75 fixed-penalty notices for speeding, driving the wrong way down a one-way street, parking on the approach to a pelican crossing, misuse of foglamps and number-plate and seatbelt offences.

Some things in life are more difficult to do than they ought to be, and one of those is making an appointment to see a GP.

Common sense is needed

8:37am Friday 28th November 2008

A growing number of people are travelling around West Yorkshire by train. That’s good news for the environment. It reduces the number of cars on our overcrowded roads and cuts down on the pollution they create. So in theory the more people who take to the rails, the better.

Stage is set for a bright new year

9:10am Thursday 27th November 2008

At times of general gloom, theatres and cinemas tend to thrive as people seek ways of shutting themselves off for a few hours from life’s worries. Bradford seems well-placed to provide escape routes.

Late licence could cause disruption

8:36am Wednesday 26th November 2008

There was a time when Bradford’s potential to become a “24-hour city” was being seriously discussed. The vision was conjured up of clubs, pubs, cafes and bars open round the clock to cater for the leisure needs of a sophisticated population.

Message must be got across

8:37am Tuesday 25th November 2008

With knife crime alarmingly prevalent among young people, it is worrying that such a high proportion of shops in central Bradford and the surrounding suburbs failed in a “sting” operation to see how willing they were to sell potential weapons to under-age teenagers.

We need to see more of Odeon plan

8:18am Friday 21st November 2008

The decision by the DCMS to reject the appeal against the refusal to grant listed building status to the former Odeon cinema and bingo hall should not really have come as a surprise to anyone. With six previous failed listing attempts, it always seemed like clutching at straws.
