It’s five years since we launched the Bin It For Bradford campaign with the aim of cleaning up the district’s streets. Sadly, although that campaign was successful in raising public awareness at the time, anyone who walks around the city and suburbs can’t help but conclude that the problem has returned – if it ever really went away. Bradford is clearly suffering from the British disease, which includes a tendency to drop litter.

Having a go when criminals strike can be a very risky business. Warehouseman Derek Wilson discovered that after a colleague, Sam Szakacs, tried to prevent raiders driving off in a van with a television they had stolen from the men’s workplace. After Mr Szakacs intervened, the van was driven backwards and Mr Wilson was crushed between it and another vehicle.

Bradford drivers can be a dangerous lot even when sober, as a police crackdown in the Great Horton Road area has shown. It’s a cause for considerable concern that during a ten-hour period, motorists in the streets around the University and college buildings were given a total of 75 fixed-penalty notices for speeding, driving the wrong way down a one-way street, parking on the approach to a pelican crossing, misuse of foglamps and number-plate and seatbelt offences.

A growing number of people are travelling around West Yorkshire by train. That’s good news for the environment. It reduces the number of cars on our overcrowded roads and cuts down on the pollution they create. So in theory the more people who take to the rails, the better.

At times of general gloom, theatres and cinemas tend to thrive as people seek ways of shutting themselves off for a few hours from life’s worries. Bradford seems well-placed to provide escape routes.

There was a time when Bradford’s potential to become a “24-hour city” was being seriously discussed. The vision was conjured up of clubs, pubs, cafes and bars open round the clock to cater for the leisure needs of a sophisticated population.

With knife crime alarmingly prevalent among young people, it is worrying that such a high proportion of shops in central Bradford and the surrounding suburbs failed in a “sting” operation to see how willing they were to sell potential weapons to under-age teenagers.
