Wibsey beat the weather and their opponents as they eased into the second round of the EDF Energy Junior Vase with a 24-17 victory over Sheffield Medicals.
In an error-strewn first half, Wibsey had the upper hand in the tight phases, which gave their backs freedom to attack.
But it was Medics who opened the scoring with a well-worked try in the corner.
Wibsey replied when Scott Smith hacked the ball ahead after a break. Good counter-rucking saw the ball squirt free from the Sheffield full back’s grasp for Smith to touch down under the sticks. Simon Birkbeck converted to give Wibsey a 7-5 half-time lead.
A Harry Hall 50-metre interception try and Birkbeck conversion saw Wibsey pull clear before a succession of penalties gave Medics a way back into the game at 14-11.
The Villagers managed to regain their composure long enough for Hall to create another try when he chipped over the defence and won the race to touch down, Birkbeck converteing.
Two more Medics penalties made it 21-17 before Sawyer slotted over a scruffy drop goal to seal the victory.
