Dave Cameron was manager at the end of last season – this campaign the imposing Scot will be player-manager.

The former Football League striker wanted to register as a player when he moved to Horsfall Stadium but his transfer was blocked by red tape. Having come from Principality League of Wales outfit Rhyl he needed international clearance to sign for Avenue but the deadline had expired.

Cameron had hoped to do the same amount of work as the rest of his playing staff once the players reported back from their summer break but management duties prevented that.

“Right from the start I had to run the training sessions, especially with Carl (assistant Ruffer) being a player first and foremost. So I was sidelined, holding the stopwatch and dishing out instructions.

“I was happy with that at the time because I thought I had four or five strikers in my squad. Since then Ryan Sugden has gone back to Halifax Town and I have found out that Rory Patterson will miss the start of the season as he has a three-match suspension to serve, so, I decided to get fit and make myself available.”
