Avenue look to wipe out the memory of their most disappointing defeat this season by beating promotion rivals Marine at home on Saturday.

A degree of pride was restored after the 5-0 hammering at Kendal when Dave Cameron’s side came from behind to earn a point at Buxton in midweek.

And they could fully restore confidence with victory over their fourth-placed visitors.

Avenue’s hopes of back-to-back promotions have been damaged by an inconsistent run but Cameron knows there is a lot of football still to be played.

He said: “We have this glorious opportunity to turn everything around and turn the gloom into smiles.

“The best thing for the players, for me and the supporters is to be facing a game against a side like Marine.

“They are one of a handful of teams above us in the table so there will be no hiding places, everyone has to stand up and be counted.

“There is nothing to choose between the top ten sides considering it is so early in the season.

“We want to be picking points up and making sure we are still in the mix when January comes around. That’s when the business end comes in.”

Cameron has brought in Matt (left winger) and Rob (centre back) Morgan – sons of former Avenue player Dave who recently joined Silsden as assistant manager – for the last two games and Saturday’s squad will feature yet another new name.

He said: “We had no fresh injuries against Buxton so the squad will be the same but Tom Clancy will be added after I brought him in from Ossett Town.

“Tuesday’s effort at Buxton was very pleasing after the game before.

“The lads showed desire and almost got a victory from it in horrendous conditions.

“There was no doubting the commitment of the players in that game. They have to turn up with the same attitude against Marine.

“There will be other changes to the squad as the season goes on and I’m not saying that just to get a reaction out of the lads. Some of them are playing for their futures at the club.”
