No fantom triumph for Courtney

Bradford Shotokan Academy member Courtney Rivers-Gallagher has won a medal in her first international competition.

The nine-year-old pupil from Foxhill School in Queensbury took a silver in the fantom kumite (fighting) category at the Harasuto Karate Grand Prix in Lodz, Poland to earmark her as one for the future.

Two other Academy members – Jack Nicolas and Danniell Manning, both aged 12 from Tong School – were knocked out of their kumite section in the repechage.

The trio were up against competitiors from, among other European countries, Ukraine, Latvia and Germany, as well as Poland.

Earlier, Courtney was knocked out in the third round of the junior kata.

The Bradford Shotokan Academy is based at Richard Dunn Sports Centre and training is on Tuesdays (7pm-8.30pm), Fridays (7pm-8pm) and Sundays (11am-12.30am). Further information is available from Fred on 07787-880330.
