Myles Stirk and James Lund saw off all-comers at the first of this winter’s Rising Star meets at Shipley Pool.

Stirk’s quartet of 25-metre titles in the City of Bradford Swimming Club and Leisure Services Swimming Development event came in the boys’ seven to eight years category.

Meanwhile, nine-year-old Lund was another star in the Telegraph & Argus-sponsored competition, also winning the backstroke, breaststroke, freestyle and butterfly.

However, the top overall swimmer awards went to Lucy Rhodes (Bradford Swimming Club) and Shahaab Farooq (City of Bradford).

Bradford Dolphin duo Laura Hartley and Jordan Tate won the top girl and boy awards, based on four events available to all swimmers.

In the girls’ seven to eight years events, Grace Acton (Bradford Dolphin) won the freestyle and backstroke, and it was a clean sweep for Bradford Dolphins in the girls’ nine years, with Hartley taking breaststroke and freestyle, Megan Lee backstroke and Millie Foulds butterfly.

Individual medleys over 100m were introduced for ten years and over, and Tate won all four individual 50m strokes but Luke Strauss (City of Bradford) claimed the medley.

Hannah Beaumont (City of Bradford) was victorious in the girls’ ten years backstroke and medley, and 11-year-old Aidan Sheldon (City of Bradford) prevented Dolphins’ Matthew Brown claiming a clean sweep when he won the breaststroke.

Rhodes claimed victories in the girls’ 11 years freestyle and backstroke, while Farooq came through with flying colours in the boys’ 12-13 years freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and medley.

Additional age groups were added for 12 and 13-year-olds for the first time. Dolphins’ Carla Chyriwsky won the butterfly and medley, team-mate Grace Hobson the breaststroke and Bingley’s Miram Budimir the backstroke and freestyle.

my wife and i went to the rising stars swimming gala to support our two grandaughters and what a marvellous sight to see all those children taking part.but it was a bit disappointing to see more than twice as many girls taking part than boys.but credit to every one of the swimmers, so keep your T & A support going and long may it last malcolm lee
