Peter Moores claims that England’s cricketers will be “playing for the badge” and not the £1m a man booty in the Stanford series.
Incredibly, the coach manages to say that without bursting out laughing.
Alistair Cook, the straightest bat in the England pavilion, has already made it plain this Caribbean jaunt is all about the mega money.
But the head coach still maintains: “It’s an international game to be played by England. Alastair knows that and we’ll be very proud to go out there and play for England.
“When the lads walk out there they will be playing for the badge like they always do for England and will try and win that game to create some momentum to take to India.”
Not to mention some serious movement in the bank balance. It’s fair to say the international credit crunch hasn’t reached Sir Allen Stanford.
Perhaps in these testing times, Moores should set up his own sideline. If he can keep a straight face with a statement like that, he’s got to be one hell of a poker player.
