Bradford professionals Simon Bedford and Wayne Cooper crashed out of the Maplin UK Championships earlier this week at the Sheffield Snooker Academy.
Cooper played Pickering’s Paul Davison on Monday and lost 9-5, while Bedford went out 9-8 to Chinese star Jin Long.
There are three more ranking events in the new year – the Welsh Open, China Open and the World Champion-ships – and both players will be hoping that 2009 will bring a little more luck their way.
The second round of the Flexprint Services-sponsored Hey’s Trophy has been completed, with the competition now down to the last 16.
The next round is scheduled to be played on January 8 and 22, with matches as follows: Laisterdyke Cricket v Queensbury Cons A, Buttershaw Lane WMC v Harold Club A, Upper Bolton Cons A v Clayton Rugby A, Laisterdyke WMC A v Tong Liberals A, Salthorn WMC v Lilycroft WMC B, Eccleshill Victoria Cons A v Low Moor Club, Cuedos Snooker B v Eccleshill WMC A, Great Horton Cons A v Shipley Club.
The Hopkinson Plate trophy will get underway on the same dates, with clubs that lost the first match they played in the Hey’s being eligible.
The draw for this will take place next week and details will appear in this column in the coming weeks.
Billiards’ Moorhouse Shield first round second legs are due tomorrow night, unless clubs have made alternative arrangements.
The next round of this competition will take place on February 12 and 26.
Drawsheets and results sheets will be sent out to all clubs prior to Christmas for the above competitions.
In the Bradford Championships, last season’s semi-finalist, John Wellham from Girlington Conservative Club, has defeated Manningham Ward’s Tanveer Mohammed 4-3, while, in the pairs tournament, Wibsey Conservative Club pairing Damien Bentley and Tony Rhodes progressed to the second round courtesy of a 3-0 defeat of Martin Unsworth and Andy Briggs (The Shipley Club).
Players in both competitions have until December 31 to complete their matches.
