We'll soon catch up, says Clarke

Matt Clarke is confident City will be firmly in the promotion mix by Christmas.

The big centre half shrugged off Saturday’s narrow loss at unbeaten Wycombe which dropped them to sixth spot.

Wycombe – who have a game in hand – and leaders Darlington have now opened up four-point daylight at the top. City are tied with five other sides on 27 points.

They were sunk by a second-half strike from defender Lewis Hunt after a lucky ricochet had fallen for him in the penalty area.

But gutted Clarke believes City did enough to suggest they can stay the pace with the division’s top dogs.

He said: “You can see why Wycombe are a good team but they weren’t a cut above. We were just as good but they took that one chance from a scramble. We just cancelled each other out and I don’t think either team really deserved to win. It looked like heading for a 0-0, which would have been a good away point, so we’re really disappointed.

“You see how tight it is around the top so you want to be taking points off the other teams up there but we’re not too disheartened and I’m confident we’ll bounce back.

“The aim now is to get ourselves in a good position at Christmas and then look to kick on. It’s three points gone and we’ve got to concentrate on getting those back against Rotherham next week.

“We’ve got a big run of games now but I prefer playing against the top teams and the lads tend to perform better.”

Wycombe have let in just six goals in 15 games, the best defence in the division, and remain the one club in the country who have not lost a league match.

Stuart McCall said: “The game was exactly as I expected. Wycombe are not the most adventurous of teams but they are picking up results with 1-0s and 0-0s.

“Like at Darlington, when we lost in the last minute, we’ve got to take something when we come away to sides up the top. Unfortunately we didn’t do that but we came with an intention to be as positive as we could.

“I’m disappointed with the result but not the performance and I can’t be too critical of anybody.”

Always seem to be on the end of unlucky deflections like this...
well cheesed off sunday morning t hear the loss.
Hate the fact teams like Darlo and Wycombe are above us. Lets hope some new signings are on the way.

you get that feeling that the leaky defence is going to cost them dearly this year. Always spend the last 20 mins waiting for that inevitable goal to go in.

Hope you like cheese because you are going to get quite a lot of it on a Sunday morning.

Went to game on Saturday, thought that City were very solid, much better than Accrington and Gillingham, and probably edged the game. Was very surprised and disappointed how physical at the back Wycombe are given the credentials of their manager - like Stockport last season. Thorne and Conlon did well against them, but had no protection from the repeated fouling from the ref who repeatedly penalised Conlon. Support was great, so if the team keeps performing at this level I agree with Clarky.

Winchester, they dont remain unbeaten and have the best defensive record in the league by being nice, Taylor is a quality manager at this level and recognises that to get out of it you have to have a nasty physical streak in you, something we have lacked for many seasons.
Conlons biggest problem is that he plays the player and not the ball and ultimately ges away needless free kicks.
