City's FA Cup dream is over for another year as they tumbled out in the second round for the fourth season running.
League One Leyton Orient will instead go into tomorrow's potentially lucrative draw after an entertaining clash at chilly Valley Parade.
Orient took the lead after 14 minutes with a superb curling finish from midfielder Jason Demetriou from the edge of the box.
Michael Boulding hit the post but Orient, who had kept five successive clean sheets, gave little away in the first half.
But City found an extra gear at the start of the second period and their pressure was rewarded with a 59th-minute equaliser. Boulding raced on to Tom Clarke's through ball and held off Alton Thelwell to slot past keeper Glenn Morris.
At that stage, hopes were high of another comeback victory to follow on from the midweek win over Chesterfield.
But the visitors burst City's bubble seven minutes later as Danny Granville's looping header from a corner dropped inside the far post.
City battled late on to force a draw and even keeper Rhys Evans came up for a corner. But there was no way back to leave Stuart McCall's side with only the far more important goal of promotion from League Two to focus on for the rest of the season.
CITY: Evans, Moncur, Lee, M Clarke, O'Brien, Jones, Law, T Clarke, Nix, Conlon, M Boulding. Subs: Arnison, Bower, Thorne, Ainge, R Boulding, Osborne, McLaughlin.
