Grimsby Town Reserves 2, City Reserves 1

Two goals in as many minutes towards the end of the first half condemned City Reserves to defeat this afternoon at Blundell Park in a totesportcasino.com League Cup tie.

The visitors may have left behind the snow of West Yorkshire, but they were confronted instead by an icy cold blast off the North Sea.

The home faithful were hoping to get a glimpse of a familiar face in their team - former Liverpool and Leeds striker Robbie Fowler, who has been linked with the Mariners.

But while the former England hitman was not on the teamsheet, the Mariners did include a trialist, Jean Louis Akpro receiving clearance to play just before the teams were handed in.

The first half began with neither keeper troubled - certainly not by any opposing player, but the winter sun descending was certainly causing problems.

City took the lead in the 20th minute when Grimsby gave the ball away in midfield and Sean Taylforth picked it up and curled it beyond Gary Montgomery.

City had a let off midway through the half when Danny North ran through and, with just Jon McLaughlin to beat, fired the ball full pelt at the City keeper.

The ball cannoned off his legs and as North came in for the follow up, he collided with McLaughlin but was able to continue after treatment.

The game, but not the weather warmed up in the 42nd minute when, from a corner kick, Richard Hope headed into the top corner of the net, and a minute later he gave Grimsby the lead, again from a corner, this time heading down and away from McLaughlin.

Having come off second best in a tackle just on half-time, Louis Horne failed to come out for the second half for City, being replaced by Phil Cutler.

As with the first half, while play was end to end, opportunities for both sides were few and far between.

The closest City came was in the 67th minute when Sean Taylforth put the ball through on the edge of the area but Montgomery was too quick for the oncoming Leon Osborne and gathered the ball to safety before the Bantams striker could connect.

With 15 minutes remaining, Akpro, who had been causing City a few problems, could have capped an impressive trial when he ran down the right before unleashing a shot on the edge of the area which flew over the City bar.

City Reserves: McLaughlin, Arnison, Horne, Sharry, Ainge, Bower, Osborne, Carson, R Boulding, Brown, Taylforth. Substitutes: O'Hara (for Arnison), Convey, Harrison (for Brown), Dean, Cutler (for Horne).

PRICELESS!!!!

City lost this game 2-1, yet this report states we didn't score! We scored first, in the 20th minute when Taylforth capitalised on a mistake by Grimsby and curled it past their keeper. A good goal for City, yet the 'SPORTSDESK' didn't even know!!

Their big central defender then came up for two corners and scored on each occasion. A reason why Ainge & Bower can't get in the first team?? I wonder.

I thought the score was 2-1. A real mixed bag of players however a run out for some of the squad but best forgotten really. Some of the better younger players i have seen in recent weeks not on show.

Roll on saturday

"Waynus"-- I note your post was made at 22:54 last night. Perhaps the T and A ave ammended their report this morning @ 07:30 Thursday 04/12/08. Because the score is now correct and the following sentence:-
" City took the lead in the 20th minute when Grimsby gave the ball away in midfield and Sean Taylforth picked it up and curled it beyond Gary Montgomery."

POSTED THIS ALREADY....!

Thanks Freddy, it does appear the T&A have updated their story to include the correct score and a statement of howit was scored.

However, they have forgotten to change the line, "The closest City came was in the 67th minute when Sean Taylforth put the ball through on...". How can the closest we came be in the 67th minute when we scored in the 20th? Poor journalism from so-called professional writers.

Security words - 'drug-tape'. Why are most of the security words containg 'drug' at the moment?

You are quite right on this point W aynus. The journalism is lazy. I was listening to an away match recently that i was unable to attend and the Monday report by Simon Parker may have well as been what Tim n STicks were saying on the Pulse. They mentioned that he was sat nearby and he as even on occasions i believe done summaries and interviews with them. It sounds an easy/comforatable job to me. I know personally that Paddy Mcguffin is the only city fan in his T n A office and feel the job should be passed on to him. I used to be the T and A everyday mainly for the sport but only ever read the letters page, whats on guide i.e. gigs etc and tv guide. Rest of it does my head in. All those pictures of sad people either comlaining or asking for somat. Hides too much truth out of fear if you ask me. If Paddy dont want the job though i know someone who wants (not necessarily do) the job in these very pages. Give him a chance someone please the ratings would soar lets be fair his weekly match reports are funy enough o their own.

Although I agree with most of the post, (obviously can't comment on the T&A office or McGuffin), I have noticed your quotation of my username. Just can't stop yourself can you!

Was the "i know someone who wants (not necessarily do) the job in these very pages", another dig at me?

Just let it lie and move on. I have offered the olive branch, so we can move on instead of point scoring.
