City overrun in game of attack and defence

City 3, Barnet 3

A big question on City fans’ lips ahead of this game was how well the team would cope without their wide men.

The pace of Joe Colbeck and Omar Daley have provided much of their attacking impetus this season but both were missing for the first time.

At half-time they appeared to have got their answer as City showed they had lost none of their attacking edge with three quality goals. The only down side was the return of the Bantams’ frailty at the back as slack defending saw Barnet net two themselves.

The second 45 minutes was a different story though. Outnumbered by Barnet’s fluid five-man midfield, City were overrun for the vast majority of the half. Unable to keep possession as well as their visitors, they certainly missed the wide outlets that Daley and Colbeck have provided.

The equaliser from the dangerous Albert Adomah with 15 minutes left may have been controversial, City goalkeeper Rhys Evans claiming he had saved his shot on the line, but it was no more than Barnet deserved after a half which more resembled a game of attack and defence.

City’s failure to keep the ball after the break was a big letdown, yet they showed they can do it with the best move of the match which led to their opener after ten minutes.

It started in their own half and saw Nicky Law, Michael Boulding, TJ Moncur and Peter Thorne exchange passes before Moncur curled a superb cross for Barry Conlon to hold off his marker and head into the top left corner off the woodwork. It was a goal that would have had Match of the Day analysts drooling.

But the good work was undone ten minutes later. Tom Clarke had already produced a moment of slackness when he missed his kick and let in the lively John O’Flynn but Evans bailed him out with a superb save one-on-one.

Moncur turned from hero to villain as his weak backpass was not dealt with properly by Evans and O’Flynn converted the loose ball into the empty net.

City regained the lead on 29 minutes when Paul McLaren’s dangerous free-kick from the left was converted at the back post by Thorne. The leading scorer got ahead of his marker after Conlon had created problems with his physical presence.

The Bantams didn’t learn their lesson though as more weak defending let Barnet back in two minutes later.

O’Flynn was allowed to pass Clarke too easily down the left and he pulled the ball back for Adomah. His shot produced another fine save from Evans but Nicky Nicolau was on hand to shoot home the rebound.

Back came City in a match that seemed to be heading for a cricket score. Just two more minutes had elapsed when another fine ball into the box from deep by Moncur found Conlon in the box.

The Irishman, showing his best-ever form in a City shirt, chested the ball down well and slammed home into the right-hand corner.

Such a thrilling half meant the second period had much to live up to and it proved an anti-climax – at least for City fans. Nearly all the play featured in the Bantams’ half and you would have thought it was the visitors and not the hosts who had a chance of going top.

Law provided City’s only shot on target when he forced a good save from Lee Harrison from outside the box after 65 minutes.

Their cause was not helped when midfield livewire Dean Furman had to be substituted due to a hamstring injury, with McLaren already hindered after jarring his knee in the first half. City seem to be cursed in the midfield when it comes to injuries.

Barnet were looking anything but a side placed 19th in the division before the game and it was easy to see why they had drawn at Shrewsbury and won at Rotherham in recent weeks.

Adomah’s equaliser after substitute Adam Birchall had helped on Joe Devera’s cross was always coming and in the end City were left hanging on for a point.

The Barnet winger might have won it for his side had he done better with a header at the far post and Evans was called upon again to tip a long-range shot from Michael Leary round the post.

The boos that greeted the final whistle told the story of what the fans thought and City boss Stuart McCall admitted his side had not done enough to win the game.

He said: “It was a poor second half and we’ll take a point. When we give goals away like we did in the first half, it gives them belief to go on and get more and they fully merited the point.

“When we had the ball in the second half we were frightened to put it in the channels because we didn’t have a lot of pace without Colbeck and Daley.

“There was a lot of willingness and hard work but it’s nice when you have a bit of pace to turn things as then you can squeeze up and give your defence a breather but it wasn’t the case today.

“We’ve had to defend a lot of crossed balls. I think second half we’ve not put a cross in and they’ve put about 15 or 16 crosses over with the two wide men.”

McCall added: “We scored three really good goals. The first was a great goal, a good cross and good header, the second’s a well-worked free-kick and the third was a terrific finish.

“That part was pleasing – the three goals and the point. The rest of it was not what we are normally about.”

Before everybody starts lets all remember that after 15 games we are 3rd and 1 point off the top!! If that had been offered at beginning of season then i would have took that.

C'mon all you that slated Matt Clarke, saying he was bringing Lee down to his level, tell me now how good Lee is!! Lumpit Lee is shocknig, too old, too slow, cant pass, definately cant organise!!

The defence was an absolute joke again, but did you see Lee giving anyone a rollocking or even apearing mildy upset?? geat captain eh??
The one thing that is blindingly obvious to me is the distinct lack of pace from centre back to centre forward, other teams pass and move round us like we aren't there leaving us chasing shadows, only Furman looks capable of keeping up.

Mccall's main signings have been very dissapointing, Lee, enough said!!
McLaren, good at set pieces, but like Lee, too old, too slow, cant tackle, not what we need in centre midfield.
Boulding, slightly faster than Thorne, but hardly terrorises defences with his pace, was he worth chasing so hard for?? as for saying left wing isnt his position, i'm pretty sure he's played most of his career there up until the last few seasons!!
I have no doubt they're were younger, better and quicker players out there for a lot less in wages.

Mccall's after match interview was shocking, didnt appear at upset at the performance, he keeps telling us that theyre are lots of good teams in this division, do me favour, we arent a good team and we could have gone top!! Barnet should have been beaten but like so many other teams that come to VP they are allowed to dominate and control the tempo from the off, giving them confidence to attack, add that to our shocking defending and it'seasy to see why teams enjoy playing us.
No Colbeck or Daley but cant use that as an excuse, that City team should be capable of beating most teams in this division.
Abolute rubbish!!
Gspot, it's not the posiion we're in, tho we wont be there for much longer at this rate, its they way we play that is extremely dissapointing, if we went up we'd need 11 new players or we'd be straight back down.

I did not attend, but looking at the Barnet Goals; Citys' defence was abyssmal. Their first goal was a disgraceful back pass mix up that our keeper should have dealt with, by clearing the ball-into touch if necessary. The back pass was so soft and weak, it caused the keeper to panic, and take his eye off the ball and let it through.
The second goal should not have occured from a cross, that our defender could not block.(He was skinned). The keeper did well to make the first save, but not one City defender was marking or running with the Barnet Striker; who had a free shot on the run, into the target.
The third Barnet goal came from one of three/four Barnet strikers in the box, who were not even marked!. All any one of them had to do, was collect the cross in, and fire at the target. There was not one City defender, on any of these free extra strikers, in the box!.Sunday League players could organise their marking better than City!.

I have seen these City defensive errors, on several occasions this Season. With the Coaching Staff of ALL EXPERIENCED DEFENDERS this is DISGRACEFUL-McCall,J
acobs, and Wetherall. What on earth are you three doing in your coaching/training sessions?; to allow the defence to continue in this completely disorganised chaos, when under an attack from the opposition?.
Looking at the matches we have lost and drawn, the goals against illustrate what a mess our disorganised defence has become.
It will not do. There needs to be some 'Hairdryers' given to all three Coaches, from the Supporters, who pay their salaries. Dare you hold a FORUM now all THREE of you, with your Supporters?; and explain your incompetent inability, to effect an organised, well disciplined defence?.WHAT ARE YOU THREE DOING ABOUT THE VERY POOR DEFENDING; DURING THE WEEKS TRAINING SESSIONS?.
'note-them'-ALL THREE OF YOU!!!!

Halifax B Lee is 30 years old. Luke O'Brien is 20.TJ Moncur is 21. Tom Clarke is 20. It was Moncur who cocked up with Evans and O'Brien left for dead, for one of the other goals. Matt Clarke is big, fast, has stamina, and is physically strong. He can't pass, gets caught out of position, and struggles to pass. Personally think Bower is the more cultured central defender.

I was at VP on Saturday and agree with SM that the build up of our goals and finishing was fantastic, in fact it was quite clear why we are favorites to get promoted as we ARE a big club. The defending was shocking it was real school-boy errors. However, I do want to be positive overall: Did we play our best? NO!, did we get a result? YES! So if we can go out on match days and not play our best without the likes of regular pace men e.g Daley and get a point I feel that this was the best we can achieve on a real bad day at the office. This is what shows character and at the end of the season it is what will count.
I'm fed up of negativity we need to get behind SM and the lads and be the 12th man on the pitch. All the clubs that come to VP pull up their game as they are at a fantastic stadium with 5 to 10 times the crowd they would normally play to, and lets be honest this is their CUP FINAL.
I hope you all agree, by the way big respect must go out to my fellow Bantams in the T.L.Dallas stand singing from start to finish, it makes a refreshing change from the old days of a silent ground. Lets make VP a fortress once again; let the lads intimidate opposition on the pitch and we can do it on the terraces!!!

Gspot. This is a site dedicated to opinions. So if disgruntled fans want to blow off steam after watching yet another lacklustre home display so be it! Yes we are 3rd but yesterdays performance isn't an isolated display! We are just not stamping our authority or bossing games. Never thought we would miss Bullock as much as we are as we're often getting bullied by teams in midfield. Maybe we should switch Moncur to central defence, his natrual position. Recall Arnison to his natrual position at right back and switch Tom Clarke into midfield. Maybe also we should be working on basic defending and ball retention. Hang on a minute? Didn't I say that a few weeks ago! I anticipate another trip to the go-Karts to tightern up our defence this week!

its ok saying that Gspot, but its the perfomances of late whats eating everybody. if super sub barry hadnt featured in the last 2 matches, we would we out of the play off places, and a club of our calibure in this league, should not be putting woefull performances like we witnesed on saturday. things have to change fast, or our season will be over at christmas, theres also a injury list as long as my kiddies crimbo wish list. with 2 or 3 tough games in the next 3 weeks i find it dificult to see city winning any of them at the minuet. sorry but thats the way is it..

soulman,
I cant belive you think Bower is a cultured defender, now i cant take you seriously!!!
Yes Lee maybe only 30 but he runs like an OAP and gets caught out of position and kicks for touch with every pass, I never said M Clarke was better, i was simply pointing out that it was easy to blame Clarke for the shocking state defence, and not as easy to point the finger of blame at the supposedly captain, personally i think both Lee & Clarke are just as bad as eachother,I have seen much better centre backs visit VP this season.
Moncur had the game of his life on Tues but back to normal on Sat & it was T Clarke who got brushed on aside on the touchline for the 2nd goal. As for O'Brien, he did ok again, still learning.
what i'm saying is it's down to Lee to organise them and drive them on, he doesnt do it.

totally agree with gspot how many of us wouldnt have taken 3rd spot after nearly a third of season gone regardless of how poor we have played nearly all of us yes i agree performances havent been brillant but its results that count after our blip where we won only 1 in 6 games we have now taken 7 pts from a possible 9 without beening good we could all say its just a poor league or we could say we havent it top gear yet apart from the exeter game but either way we are third regardless

halifax bantam regarding lee as for him beening captain i agree he isnt vocal enough however since matty clarke dismissal at grimsby he as played better without clarkey at his side none of the goals yesterday were down to him and at grimsby and against bury he looked more solid than in previous games

as for the game in itself we certainley missed daley he may not always pick the right pass but because of his pace i very much doubt there right winger yesterday would have played so far forward okay boulding isnt slow but daley is probably one of the quickest players in all four leagues hence until yesterday every team as doubled up on him just to try and stop him

Ricky,
On the face of it, 3rd spot doesnt look that bad, but its the performances that people are questioning, they are far too inconsistant.
Fact is we cant keep shipping soft goals week in week out or we wont even make the play offs, we're only 3rd because we had a good start, that should have spurred us on, there's no spark to City, cant put my finger on why but it's just not there.
There's no more passion and determination then when we had half a team of loan players and thats down to Mccall, maybe he should stop trying to be one of the boys and start barking at a few, with him, Jacobs and Wetherall we have too many "nice" people at the club, who's there to rollock the players and keep them on their toes??

East Bowling Bantam, yes the build to our goals was good but that counts for nothing if you give goals away like we do.If Saturay was classed as a "result" by Mccall then we're in trouble!!

I think some of the comments are a little OTT, while agreeing the defending for the goals was diabolical, you have to look at the whole picture. We're in a promotion spot only one point behind the leaders, if we'd drawn at Accrington or Grimsby (which we could easily have done in the circumstances) and won on Saturday, everybody would have been happy!.This is a very open league ( a poor one I must admit), but you can't pick and choose where and when you get your points, just be grateful we have what we've got.

See the fans are being blamed for booing again, by christ what do they expect>

Us fans are blamed for more down at VP than the players themselves.

Rhys seems to be the only one actively bothered, noticed Lee had a good go at him after the passback goal, whilst letting Moncur off scot free.

Lee having a go at anyone is a bit rich when he cant pass a square ball 10 yards.

Spot on Waynus.

Woeful 2nd half, and Stuart got it badly wrong with his decisions (or lack of them.)

Boulding - totally anonymous. McLaren - big disappointment.

A bad day, and we have to improve massively if we're to get promotion.

Speen ventor! The reason why the comments are so OTT as you put it is because McCall and his team were
so inept! This has happened for the last 4 out of 5 home games with the Bury game being more of an even contest which to be honest could have gone either way! Hardly promotion form is it? The manner of the performance on saturday does not convince me that if we did enter the lottery of the playoffs we would have the stomach to acheive promotion. And as Halifax Bantam has already said had we not had such a good start we would probably be in midtable now! Is this good enough? Is it heck! We now have 2 difficult away games and where are going to be after these? On this form clinging on to a playoff berth if we're lucky!
I agree with Waynus (although I do think their number 7 is gonna be a cracking little player mate) that McCall should have changed things around before their 3rd goal went in. There was nothing coming from McCall during that break in play and only a blind man would have said that Barnet weren't gonna score soon! We were getting overrun in midfield and McCall should have acted by changing personel and probably our shape. Then you wonder why people question McCall! Looking at the whole picture since the end of September I would say we ain't gonna get an automatic promotion spot unless drastic measures are takern quickly. So to all you rose tinted specs brigade. PULL YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE SAND! Only automatic promotion will do!

Thing is, despite the performances described, things aren't going down hill. STILL third. Some of the comments are disturbing though, in the fact that they are accurate, ..... it's a touch embarrassing for a team/club of such stature struggling to perform well against the lesser 'names' in the division.

Knowing a bit about football, but obviously not as much as most on here, there were several things wrong and highlighted again on Saturday. Formation and tactics wrong from the start. Most glaring was Boulding being played wide left. He was like a fish out of water. It became laughable at times in the second half seeing Thorne and Boulding swap positions for a few minutes at a time. This led to added pressure on young O'Brien who was up against their most dangerous player and struggled throughout. Once again and particularly in the second half we were out run and out numbered in midfield. This lead to increased pressure on an already fragile defence and is even affecting Evans in goal who has been a rock up until recently. We must get back to basics and concentrate on our defence and midfield as a priority. Everything else will follow on from getting these areas right. I would also advocate an experienced assistant/mentor for McCall who can advise and offer a second opinion when needed particulary during games. I'm free!!
