The Bulls’ Super League opponents can finally breathe easy – legendary prop Joe Vagana is hanging up his boots.

After eight memorable years with Bradford, the blockbusting forward today confirmed he will retire at the end of the season and head home to New Zealand.

Joe’s up there with Robbie Paul as the best overseas signing I’ve ever seen

Steve McNamara

Vagana, 33, said: “I’m 29 now so it’s time to finish!

“No, seriously, it’s always hard to say when but I think deep down every player knows really when it is time to go.

“I just think this is right. We have some great players coming through here like Sam Burgess, Andy Lynch and Craig Kopczak and it will be right to sit down, give the body a rest and start enjoying the game from the sidelines.

“I’ve been lucky to have been at Bradford so long and enjoyed every bit of it.

“I’ve been fortunate to play in three Grand Final-winning sides as well as winning a Challenge Cup and World Club Challenges.

“The best memories though are of the great players I’ve played with – the Pauls, Jimmy Lowes, Brian Mac, Baloo (Paul Anderson) right up to today with Burge, Deacs and Lynchy.

“I’m going to miss the guys in the dressing room, the bond we have and have always had here at Bradford, the fans and the club, although I certainly won’t miss pre-season training camps and getting beaten around on the field week in week out!”

Generally, that has been the other way around.

Since signing from Auckland Warriors in 2001, the sight of helpless defenders being splattered in Vagana’s path as the giant Kiwi charges forward has become a lasting image of Super League.

The final remaining member of the Bulls’ famous Awesome Foursome, he eased his way into the club’s Team of the Century last year but his last-ever Odsal match will be against Hull KR on Bank Holiday Monday, when Bradford plan to send him off in style.

Boss Steve McNamara said: “Joe’s up there with Robbie Paul as the best overseas signing I’ve ever seen.

“Not only has he been outstanding on the field but off it as well for all the community work he’s done.

“It’s no surprise he’s probably the most popular member of our entire organisation and can be so proud of what he’s achieved.

“In my opinion, he should have won a lot more New Zealand Test caps and there’s only political reasons behind his non-selection for a large part of time, but one thing is certain, a lot of players will be glad to see the back of Joe!

“The time comes for everyone though and he has decided this is his.

“Personally, as head coach taking over in the situation I did a couple of years ago, he has been an absolute gem for me on and off the field.

“Joe’s been a very important part of my jigsaw and I really thank him for that.”

What a great player Joe has being for us over the last 8 seasons. I met him a few weeks ago in the ticket office and you couldn't meet a nicer bloke. The Bulls won't be the same without him

A true champion. The guy just typifies what a rugby league player is all about, no big fuss, no big ego, no tantrums, no malice or nastiness in his play, just all out awesome, powerful committed aggressive and skilful play with nothing less than 110% commitment week in week out. He's the only guy I've ever seen turn a game without the ball - some of his defensive hits have been shuddersome! A great role model for kids too. Thanks for the memories Joe!

What a great shame to see another Bulls ledgend leaving the club. He will be very sadly missed both on and off the field.

Was just thinking which other s/l team has lost the amount of quality players the bulls have lost over the past say 4/5 seasons??

Pryce, pauls, gilmore, bridges, parker, reardon, les, hape, henderson, gartner, both harris's, vagana, fielden, johnson. thats just having a quick think. you could make a very good team out of the above on its own.

Bet other teams have not got a list like above.

Think this indicates the promblems the bulls are now having, they are re-building to bring more success to the in the near future. are time will come again.

Fully agree BBARL6.

Just show's what macca is up against. Add to that list Peacock, Withers, Lowes, Forshaw, Anderson.

We just have to get behind the team and wait for the youth to develop.

Good luck Joe. He is Mr. Rugby league, all the reasons Micksey says and some. A gret loss to Bulls & Super League.

A true legend of Bradford and of the game of Rugby League.

You will be sadly missed but I wish you all the success in the future.

A pity we couldn't see you in some capacity with the Bulls next year. You always were a great ambassador for the game.

Total legend and fans favourite up there with Les.
Thanks for the memories Joe, always gave 100% for the cause and very entertaining it has been.

Can't see you totally retired from the game and if any of the clubs down under have any sense they will get you in on the coaching front, once you have had a well deserved rest and a few beers!!!

Thanks for the service Joe! I'm only disappointed there was no testimonial season! if anyone deserved it you did! Not just for the on field service but for all the hard work in the community! Legend for all time! I think there should be a testimonial game to say thanks to Joe!

It's entirely fitting that Big Joe announced his retirement, after scoring his annual try!!

I remember all the hype we had before the arrival of BIG JOE and I thought to myself he can’t be all that.
Well the hype turned out to be wrong, by about 10 fold. I spent the next 8 years being a big BIG JOE fan.
I’m sorry to see him leave but I’m sure JOE knows Odsal is and will always be a second home.
Cheers JOE AND THANKYOU.
