T&A breaks the good news to Halley

Stunned Bulls winger Dave Halley didn’t even realise he’d been named his country’s top player.

The Bradfordian was award-ed Wales’ player of the year at a glittering international awards ceremony in Brisbane on Sunday night.

While brilliant Aussie full back Billy Slater picked up the world’s finest gong and dejected England duo Gareth Ellis and James Graham came top in their positions, Halley was praised in the emerging nations categories.

“I never knew anything about that!” he said, after being asked about his feat by the T&A.

“It’s the first I’ve heard of it but it’s a great achievement.

“I’m really pleased to get it, especially when you think of some of the players who have pulled on the Wales jersey.”

The RLIF decided to mark the 2008 Rugby League World Cup and the game’s centenary in Australia by introducing the international awards that will provide ongoing recognition of players throughout the world.

It is voted on achievements between October 2007 and October of this year, a period which saw Halley burst onto the Wales scene, scoring twice on his debut against Papua New Guinea and appearing in all four of his country’s Tests.

He impressed during their win over Scotland last year, although ultimately it wasn’t enough to win them a World Cup place, their final chance going in a defeat to Lebanon.

Halley, 22, was relatively inexperienced then but returned to action as one of the more senior heads in a new-look Wales side vanquished 72-0 by Australia-bound England last month.

But, again playing full back, as he has throughout his international career, he produced some of his country’s rare bright moments.

Halley admitted: “Without being over-confident, I have had some of my best games for Wales.

“We had a pretty depleted squad last time out and we are rebuilding, so me and Craig Kopczak had to step up a bit.

“But those first games last year when greats like Iestyn (Harris) and Lee Briers were still playing, they were really something to remember.

“It’s a lot different now but I’m really enjoying working under John Dixon and Justin Morgan and also Iestyn, who’s now coaching. He only turned up for one day though!”

Class player and deserves to be starting Number 1 next season!

seriously dont think he'll feature much given his 'demotion' to the 20 shirt. Too small to be a winger and has similar faults to platt at fullback although for some reason platts get highlighted and halleys glossed over. Shame really as he's bradford through and through

This little Welsh-Bradfordian does not find Superleague as easy as Welsh duty. He is coming to the end of his 1 year contract and one wonders what will happen when that is up? I hope he gets a new contract but he will have to be competing with Platty and looking at both players strengths and weaknesses theres little between them with Platt just winning out on size and strength.

Hi Haitch. He has said that he is trying to bulk up for new season which could help him in his game I suppose but I still think he is too small.
He has decent hands and a good eye for the game but he was supposed to be our fastest player yet couldnt catch Sykes in the international? Reckon the likes of Worrincy or Sheriffe may be our quickest now.
If they keep Halley on books he will only be waiting until Platt gets injured or suspended otherwise dont see him being considered at all.

If the bulls are content in just making the play offs then he'll make a reasonable squad player.

what errors does he make that are similar to platts? platt cant catch where as dave was safe as houses at fullback. I think if he gets his chance then he can come on this season as he did at international level. Thought he played well against england it just wasnt his fault no1 else around him was good enough! i think he could be a lcass fullback. just dont see what macca sees in platt!

I hold my hand up and bow to your superior knowledge,if that's the case. I knew it was reported that he had a 1 year contract mid last term but didn't realise it started this season. So that's good for the lad. I don't think he makes the same errors as Platt but I suppose Platt is better at breaking the line and at scoring trys. Halley has speed but just seem to stop when he comes up against an opponent. At the moment neither are top class F/B's

Halley - Usually Safe, reliable, makes the odd handling error.

Platt, Always Unsafe, Unreliable, Makes regular poor decisions as well as handling errors.

COME ON YOU ALL HAVE TO REMEMBER THE TACKLE OF THE SEASON ONE ON ONE PALEASENA AND HALLEY WHICH HALLEY WON

Think platts general play is pretty good. his decision making however is terrible, with frequent passes instead of taking ball forward himself being the most common one, followed by not being decisive enough when ball bobbling about in the in goal area. Dont think he's particularly bad under the high balls. Halley seems to have better positional sense and is pretty safe under high ball. His problem areas area at back end of season seemed more a confidence thing with a string of knock ons and handling errors. Also whilst he does attempt to take ball forward himself he seems to get stopped too easily. If we could merge the two players only taking their respective strengths we'd have a very good fullback. Think at the moment platt just has the edge size and strengthwise and feel his problems are more straightforward to coach out of him. Maybe get spruce or withers or even sir keith in for some one on one coaching sessions? We've been blessed with a series of top class fullbacks and we need to be a bit patient with these two whilst they develop imo

Not much to argue with mdn. It has also been suggsted by Gumshoe that we should bring someone in to coach the Fullbacks.
Problem I see with that is we could do with a coach to teach half a doz., players and it shouldn't be necessary. We have a coaching team and they should be able to coach these guys. Otherwise if the guys can't play F/B lets get a player who can.

thing is fullbacks a position where theres a lot to learn in terms of positioning and tactics etc, and we've had three particulary strong players in this department in the last decade or two, whilst none of our coaching staff have played there afaik. Dont know about other two but mumby lives over bridlington way and would imagine it wouldnt cost the earth to get him in for a few one to one sessions. surely cant hurt.

Total agreement mdn, I have been saying this for months. Any of our past FB stars could help Platt and probably Halley as well with all attributes of a quality FB.
IMO we cannot afford errors this year to the level of last year and it should be one of the first areas addressesed by coaching staff. Platty needs to stop posing and preening and concentrate on the full 80 mins and make the rught decisions for the team, not himself.
