England’s troubled World Cup campaign has not put Steve McNamara off eventually leading his country.

The Bulls boss is back out on Bradford’s training field after returning from the national side’s doomed six-week trip to Australia.

England chief Tony Smith came under immense pressure from the media spotlight Down Under but assistant McNamara maintains that intense glare wouldn’t scare him off going for the top job in the future.

“Absolutely not,” said the coach, who has now come to the end of his current 18-month RFL deal. “Being frank, we never read anything out there anyway.”

As England No 2, McNamara was heavily involved during the tourists’ failed tournament but said: “I enjoyed the experience. As a coach you’re always going through different experiences and this was another new one – as an assistant, on tour with England.

“Just as when you’re head coach, I learned things all the time and this was another part of my development.

“Unfortunately, it just didn’t happen for us and we were all very disappointed for everyone, including the fans out there and back here.

“You learn from it though. We certainly have after these last few weeks and what I will say is the players were a pleasure to have around.”

What did you learn Steve? Nobody's stuck for you more than me and in the devlopment of the club's kids and taking over in a difficult time I think you're doing a good job but where I'm concerned is that the defensive frailties on show in Oz were not disimilar to those displayed by the Bulls last season.

We need to be meaner, grittier and quicker off our line. Scruton, Cook, Morro, Burgess are key but I'd also like to see a bit 'nastier' attitude. Not thuggery but shall we say a bit of 'animal'.

Too right Brian, controlled aggression and power, big hits and solid lines.

The other frailties shown down under similar to ours last season were dropped ball. I have never seen a bulls team make so many simple and costly errors as they did this last season, this must be rectified ASAP for new season. We cannot afford to do this in any games on such a regular basis.

agree with you both. but lets face it, smith didn't chose players renowned for their defensive qualities did he. just hope next season shows some improvement but i do think that fitness is the key, if we can keep them fit and strong then we should be able to compete with any other team.

I know it's an honour to coach your Country but I just wish Macca would forget GB and concentrate on learning his trade at the Bulls. He is far from the finished article as many on here are quick to remind him. Lets just have 100% concentration on the job at Bradford for now Macca then. IF you make it (and yes it's a big IF) we will all wish you the best with an international career.

Understatement of the century there cj! Smith did the same as coaches past, promised to "pick on form" and then continued to pick the same, dare i say, losers! What would make them any better 2/3/4 years down the line?

As for Macca, hopefully he'll follow smith's club record and turn some our young lads into genuine class.

Lets face it, Macca was left with a good squad and he's turned it into a bunch of no hopers. Time the guy went, his record is appauling up to date.

A Squad on the slide. Star players jumping ship,Rugby Union Money and Wigans!. Any Coach without funds would struggle. Why else wuld Noble run away?. I agree Adey, Macca has some good young kids coming through. He could make a real name for himself this year.Just needs to put GB second for a while.

The good squad that included the likes of quality backs like Hape, Vainikolo, Harris, Withers and Bai, compared to the dross we have now.

You say a squad on the slide, but yet you refuse to notice that the slide has occured when Macca has come in and had his way with the squad...I dont get it?
