McNamara unhappy with new structure

Steve McNamara believes Super League’s radical new play-off format – where one team CHOOSE their own opponents – is going to heap “undue and unfair” pressure on coaches.

The Bulls boss is startled the groundbreaking system, believed to be unique in world sport, was passed by the Rugby Football League for 2009.

As expected, the play-offs have been extended to take in the top eight teams now Super League has increased from 12 to 14 clubs.

But the major talking point is that the highest-placed side after the first round will get to select their next foes.

Such a brave concept is guaranteed to bring attention to the sport and whip up excitement while drawing some fascinating prospects.

But no team picked will ever need any extra motivation to cause an upset and McNamara admitted: “It’s not ideal by any stretch of the imagination.

“All the fans and the crowds will be excited by the idea of a club choosing a team to play but from a coach’s point of view it’s tough.

“I’ve spoken to some and they don’t favour it. I certainly don’t agree with it and can’t see any of us being in favour.

“I’m all for innovative ideas and I like how this play-off system generally looks, with the top four getting an advantage.

“But this other part of it just puts unfair and undue pressure on the coach to make them choose. Maybe it should be up to the chairman to make the call!”

According to the RFL, all 14 clubs have been consulted about the revolutionary new format, which sees all eight qualifying teams involved on the opening weekend.

The league leaders face the fourth-placed team, second play third, fifth tackle eighth and sixth battle it out with seventh.

Matches involving the top four teams will be qualifying play-offs, with the winners going straight through to the third week of the series.

The losers in these two games have another chance in the second week when they face the winners of the elimination play-offs, which involve the next four teams.

In week three, the winners of the two qualifying play-offs meet the week two victors, with the highest-placed team allowed to select their opponents from a choice of two.

McNamara said: “I just think it’s not how it should be. You play all season to finish where you finish and if you get to the stage where you’re playing whoever, then that’s who you should play.

“But this is what has been decided so we’ll all get on with it and see what happens.”

RFL chief executive Nigel Wood explained: “This new eight-team play-off series is a tremendous development for the sport and the competition.

“It will create great drama and bring an added dimension to what is already the most exciting period in the season.

“The increase in play-off places will also add more interest to the regular season by giving more matches added significance as clubs battle through the weekly rounds to give themselves a shot at the title.

“By introducing the element that allows the highest-placed qualifier to select their semi-final opponents in week three, rugby league has once again shown it is a highly innovative and progressive sport.’’ The play-offs, expanded from the five and six-team systems in operation since 1998, climax with the Grand Final at Old Trafford on October 10.

NEW PLAY-OFF STRUCTURE – Week one: Qualifying play-off 1 – 1 v 4 (winner receives a bye to week three), Qualifying play-off 2 – 2 v 3 (winner receives a bye to week three), Elimination play-off 1 – 5 v 8 (loser goes out), Elimination play-off 2 – 6 v 7 (loser goes out).

Week two: Preliminary semi-final 1 – QPO 1 loser v EPO 1 winner, Preliminary semi-final 2 – QPO 2 loser v EPO 2 winner.

Week three: *Qualifying semi-final 1 – QPO 1 winner v PSF 1 winner, *Qualifying semi-final 2 – QPO 2 winner v PSF 2 winner.

Week four: Grand Final – QSF1 winner v QSF2 winner.

* Subject to choice of highest-placed winner in week one.

If not happy Macca and you say others are not aswell, why was it agreed after consultation with all 14 clubs, why did the clubs not say NO!! I bet Leeds and Saints said yes to it and it was motion carried.

Been better all 8 teams in a bag and drawn out, thats reasonable and fair (unless CC draw).

Security word: wood-must (why must he?)

I think this is about money, simple as that. yet again the RFL put the interests of generating more cash from more income ahead of raising the bar quality wise. How do the 7th & 8th best teams contribute to the playoffs when the truth is they've been ordinary at best all season long? They have no chance of winning it, and all it does is reward mediocrity with a playoff spot. And this, to my mind, is getting to the nub of the issue with the game in this country right now. We have just been utterly found out down under, our national coach is a blagger in my book, not one word out of him on the subject of why we were so woefully under prepared and ill equipped to play the Kiwis and Aussies, and or how we we might be in 12 months time. Just the RFL patting themselves on the back for how wonderful they are in coming up with an apparently amazing and innovative formula that won't do a thing to raise standards at all.

That should be 'raising more cash from more games' by the way. Sorry about that.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it on Teletext last night.
Choose your opponent? Crazy! Only RFL could come up with such a thing.
Is it the first step to RFL choosing who should be in the play-offs regardless of the league tables? i.e. Choose the sides who will create the most interest and have the most supporters?. Where does all this madness end?

What a crazy, but typical idea. I agree with Micksey it will do nothing at all to raise the bar.

Another typical piece of legislation by the buffoons at Red Hall. Nigel ,time to resign and go back to being a publican, you talk absolute rubbish. It will of course get the publicity you are looking for, once again the laughing stock of professional sport. How on earth do you expect the sport to be taken seriously with stupid decisions like this.

Why have "play offs" in the first place ? Surely whoever wins the league should be the winner - after all they have got the most points in the season ?
Crazy ideas from those egg chasers !!

All 8 teams playing in the first round - have Sky been informed??

If so,we can look forward to some "unusual" kick-off times,I think.

As for a club being able to chose its opposition, this is crazy.

Obviously this "priveledged" club will choose what it deems the weakest opposition, which is not "innovative",just insulting.

The decision is so bad we don't even appear to have anyone on this site who agrees with it!!Now that must be bad. In fact we've even got Shaun agreeing with Micksey and Macca. That must be a first!

I think Shaun might ill though Haitch, he was making positive noises about the Bulls the other day. Perhaps age is mellowing him.

Bells and whistles and nothing to address the decline in core skills in Super League. Everything is based around dummy half pace and offloads and the ability to catch and pass at pace is ignored. The levels of discipline and coaching at under 11s and 12s is hopeless and this is what we come up with. The evidence of the Super League and the World Cup is that we should have less teams in the play offs, not more.

As for this idea of choosing who you play, well let's forget about rugby and have a dating game. When the coach of the team is chosen we could see him put his hands over his face, cry and collapse to the floor while others run to hug him.

What a load of utter b****x.

I must have missed those comments Micksey otherwise I would have printed them off for prosperity!!!

My answer to this farce is throw 8 balls in a bag and get an ex player to draw them out! Reasonably fair and gives all teams an equal opportunity and saves all this nonsense.

Which Ex Player Gumshoe? Alex Murphy? Ray French? all at once, choosing your own opponent sounds a better idea!.

I was thinking more Hanley, chunky offiah or Scully to be honest Haitch.

Choosing own opponent does sound ok if you are the one doing the choosing and not the one being chosen. All teams will want to be at home like Saints and Leeds, Wigan etc. If they are doing this then all play offs should be at neutral grounds IMO

Brian's comments about core skills are the key here. England got stuffed because defensively our flair players are cr@p at the side of their Aussie counterparts. Because we are defensively crap tries come too easy in SL, same as they came very easy in the world cup, against us.

But what do Red Hall do? Instead of addressing what is clearly a huge problem, they keep the coach who steered us to abject embarrassing failure ( and his assistant ) they say not a word about the scale of the debacle out there, but they DO look at ways to make a juicier bit of reality TV our of our game. Is there any way we could Cheryl Cole to host the playoffs, and smile a lot at the camera?

The young players in our game are nowhere near the level required at Test level, take Morley & Peacock out of the forwards and who is there to bring in? Sam, and he isn't the finished article. The Aussies have a stream of top range young players weho don't even get a look in at test level.

We are going backwards. It genuinely is a crisis.

I notice ,Micksey, you do not mention James Graham whereas our lot think he is such a great! They even persuaded those responsible to include him in a 'World Eleven'. A complete mystery as the guy has done nothing outside of his club.
Yet another indication of what a clueless bunch they are.
Like the idea of Cheryl Cole though!!

If there is to be eight teams in the play offs, a tremendous end of season concept, why not have it over three weeks. The World Club championship could then be fitted in at the end of the season so the squad that wins the Super League can complete in it.

Week 1:
1 V 8
2 v 7
3 V 6
4 V 5

Week 2:

Match 1 V Match 4
Match 2 V Match 3

Week 3: Grand Final

If clubs start choosing their opposition where will it end?
