Lynch: It's time to toughen up

Straight-talking player of the year Andy Lynch says the Bulls must get tough with each other before even thinking about the opposition.

The England prop led from the front last season with consistently high-level displays but the club’s overall performance was a let-down.

Promising signs failed to materialise into success and they exited the play-offs at the first hurdle.

Lynch hasn’t been able to bring himself to watch that Wigan disappointment and accepts the entire squad has to buck up to ensure there is no repeat in the new Super League campaign.

Even if it means harsh words are spoken, the former Castleford front-rower believes it is the only way forward if Bradford are to end their three-year barren run without a major trophy.

“We’ve got to be more professional in everything we do,” he said.

“From turning up to training on a morning to whatever, every day has to be with real intensity.

“If people aren’t pulling their weight then, whether it’s senior players or younger players, we need to get on at them and give them a real wake-up call.”

Lynch is one of just three surviving members – current skipper Paul Deacon and England team-mate Jamie Langley are the others – of the last Bulls’ squad to taste Super League glory in 2005.

He knows what is needed for the club to re-discover that champion mentality and is confident it can be attained.

But Lynch, currently recovering from the neck injury that kept him out of the World Cup, warned: “We have to be cruel to be kind and it’s for all our benefit.

“We need to be hard on each other to be better and in order to reach our best.

“If we do everything right, spot on and with intensity then we can be successful.

“But that’s all 25 players from Monday to Friday and then one to 17 performing on game day.

“We can’t afford to have even one person being slack.”

The 29-year-old has been impressed by the attitude of new prop signing Nick Scruton, who has just won the title with Leeds Rhinos.

“He’s a good, fit bloke and a real strong player,” said Lynch.

“Scrutes showed that at the end of last season with what Leeds did and he’ll bring a lot of quality to our side.

“He’ll also take some of the weight off mine and Sam’s (Burgess) shoulders and I’m looking forward to playing alongside him.”

This is what we need more of - keep it coming Lynch! What this team needs is more leaders, more people prepared to stand up and be counted when it matters and when it hurts! Oh, and a world class centre.

Good positive attitude from Lynchy and he can see where we went wrong last year so hopefully the coaches can too. Most consistent player we have had since he arrived and front row looking good and strong for this season.
Hope rest of players play with as much heart and guts as Lynchy, if they do then good times could be beckoning once again at Odsal!

Sounds like Captain's talk,to me - just what the team needs.

Remember the days when we had both a Captain and a Pack Leader? Oh for another Frank Foster.

Could be worth re-visiting.

Sound comments from a Solid player!
Couldnt agree more with the "taking the weight off Burgess"(our only Quality player)
Macca, was nothing short of a disgrace, the way he "USED" Burgess last season....No wonder the Lads body fell apart before the play-offs!!

Absolutley, this is Macca's team now, no more excuses, he's made it his own.

He lives and dies as Bulls coach by this season.

Totally agree.I believe the coaches had a lot to answer for last season.
Everybody on the site who actually watched the team could see we werent fit enough for Superleague standards.
This will be "JUDGEMENT SEASON " for Macca & his coaching staff.Lets hope we have learnt from our failings last term.Ps..Is Solomona putting in the extra shifts to prolong his career & keeping out of Gregg's!!!

you talk some tripe sometimes shaun. you think burgess is our only quality player???? morrison, big joe, lynch are they not quality players in the pack alone. we will miss big joe this season but i'm hoping scruton will fill those boots.
it is good to know that some of the players have taken a look at how they performed. lets hope the improvement materialises.

my point....YOU TALK S***E. all you seem to do is critise and try ripping the team to bits. everyone is entitled to their opinion, but for someone who is supposed to be a bulls supporter you take great pleasure in stating our difficiencies and failures rather than looking forward and hoping for a beter season.

Think just about everybody on here with you there cj. Best to ignore the nonsense that comes from one or two individuals who quite obviously know nowt!

i do try to ignore them gumshoe but just every now and again i give in. to read a comment about our player of the year caling him "solid at best" i find an insult to a player who put his body on the line every week, never let us down and gave it his all.

I know youre refering to me Gumshoe, but to be fair, my predictions of Bulls 08 season were very accurate, not sure you were here than though, CJ and Haitch were, theyll let ya know, Brain and Micksey wont admit it though, so to say I know 'nowt' is well wide of the mark pal. I know more about RL than most on here, and Im confident my predictions forour 09 campaign will be once again be proven to be very close to the mark, although I do hope Im wrong.

mickster, you may know more than most but you don't show it. what with all the criticism you dish out. never having a good word to say about anyone players, coach and supporters. it appears that you just like to see your name in black and white. so why not get behind them all prior to the start of the season, criticise, when they balls it up during the season not before.

you maybe surprised at what a difference it makes to be liked

I have plenty of good to say about players of Bradford Bulls, and I do when they deserve it.

The coach is rubbish, the players he's recruited on the whole are rubbish and he's turned Bulls in 2 and half years into the laughing stock of SL.

He's messed up big time and its time he was sent on his way.
