Bulls' season at an end

Wigan 30, Bulls 14

For the second season running, the Bulls’ Grand Final hopes have been ruined at the first hurdle by Wigan Warriors.

There was none of the drama of last year, when the Bulls famously squandered a 30-6 lead inside 17 minutes to eventually lose 31-30 in heartbreaking fashion.

But this play-off eliminator defeat will hurt just as much as again they failed to deliver on the big occasion.

Inspired by Trent Barrett and Gareth Hock, Wigan eventually had too much class as Bradford’s season came to a premature end.

Andy Lynch was towering in defeat while Joe Vagana had a massive impact early on in what proved to be his final Bulls game but Steve McNamara’s side were not helped when skipper Paul Deacon had to depart at half-time injured.

They did well to stay in the contest, trailing just 18-14 with 13 minutes to go, but then ran out of steam as the mistakes that have plagued their season came back to haunt them.

The game had been switched from JJB Stadium after Wigan Athletic owner Dave Whelan refused permission to play there the night before his Premier League side took to the field.

Angry Warriors fans vented their anger at Whelan but by the end of the evening they were simply cheering their side across the finish line, having made Widnes’ Stobart Stadium a home from home.

The game started off at ferocious – and fearsome – pace, Vagana dumping Stuart Fielden in the opening seconds with a huge hit.

His former Bulls team-mate coughed up possession when Simon Finnigan finished him off but the visitors could not capitalise on the early opportunity when Chris Nero spilled David Solomona’s pass.

It was their failure to make the most of those half-chances in the opening 40 minutes that cost Bradford dear.

Vagana enjoyed a storming start, as did front-row colleague Lynch as they punched good yards down the middle, leaving Wigan breathless.

But Ben Jeffries dropped one pass then Deacon could not hold on to Solomona’s off-load after the big Samoan had cause havoc in the heart of Wigan’s defence.

Nero also made a half-break which lacked support and the Bulls’ early dominance was restricted to just a single Deacon penalty goal in the fifth minute.

They should have extended that when Nero went over following some great athleticism by Semi Tadulala.

The Fijian winger had leapt high to palm Deacon’s crossfield kick back infield before it sailed out but video referee Phil Bentham – after an eternity – controversially decided it went forward before Nero picked up.

Lynch did get the night’s first try though when he stormed his way over, producing a massive hand-off that floored Wigan forward Harrison Hansen on his way.

It was the least he deserved, having continually blasted his way through the Warriors pack and just the sort of form that saw Lynch run away with the Bulls player of the year awards.

Deacon improved but was later taken out late by Fielden after sending a kick downfield.

No penalty was awarded and the skipper, already a doubt having picked up a knee injury at Castleford on Saturday, hobbled away.

He was troubled by it thereafter and did not return for the second half. By then, Wigan had recovered to go in 12-8 ahead, the introduction of Hock off the bench giving the ‘hosts’ just the lift they needed.

Back from a five-match ban after grabbing referee Ian Smith, the Great Britain second-rower had plenty to prove and set about tearing into Bradford.

Aussie stand-off Barrett became more influential on the back of his surges – as did lively scrum half Thomas Leuluai, who started dancing away as the Bulls struggled to gain field position.

Glenn Morrison, making a surprise comeback after four months out injured, came on and immediately did his best to halt it all, launching himself into a rampaging Iafeta Paleaaesina.

But after Lynch was done for taking out Barrett after a kick, Leuluai darted through some weak tackling to get Wigan on the board.

Pat Richards improved before Barrett quickly forced a drop-out, Nero eventually relieving some intense pressure with a thunderous tackle on Phil Bailey.

Barrett thought he had got over himself after hitting Tim Smith’s inside pass but Michael Platt, back from suspension himself, did his job brilliantly to hold him up, with Nero again doing the business.

That effort was spoiled though when Vagana dropped possession coming out of his own 20, handing Hansen the chance to make up for his earlier gaffe by scoring a try that Richards, with just two minutes remaining, again improved.

Buoyant Wigan got the all-important first score of the second half through Mark Calderwood, who was only playing due to Darrell Goulding being taken ill this morning.

Calderwood, who scored a hat-trick to ruin the Bulls in THAT play-off match 12 months ago, picked up another Barrett kick following a fine break by Leuluai and Bradford were on the ropes.

But McNamara’s men bounced back. Lynch got in again but was denied due to Newton’s forward pass, although there was no stopping Finnigan moments later when he sliced through off the hooker’s short delivery.

Iestyn Harris, in his final Bulls match, added the extras and it was game on trailing 18-14 with 51 minutes on the clock.

Tadulala was put on report for a swinging arm on Cameron Phelps as the intensity raised another notch and then Richards missed a penalty shot as Wigan looked to regain their composure.

Bradford kept pushing but could not get the breakthrough they wanted and it was Wigan who stretched out when Joel Tomkins made the most of some dithering at the back off another Barrett grubber.

Richards’ fourth conversion saw them 24-14 in front and Bradford had to dig deep.

Their efforts became more desperate though and, as they looked to make the most of a rare overlap, Paul Sykes’ pass went forward to James Evans to leave them further frustrated.

The game was held up for a long period after Phelps was carried off, having injured himself trying to stop Tadulala, but it only served to give the visitors more time to realise their season was over.

When it resumed, Bradford were still day-dreaming as Hock shrugged off five would-be tacklers to step over for a deserved try. Richards did the rest and a difficult campaign for Bradford has now come to an end.

Another year, another let down. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed but not surprised by the outcome. Generally its been a poor season and this is the furthest we deserved to go. I honestly thought we had a chance when I looked at the team and for the first 30 minutes we were the better team. Its obviously not to be. Saints and Leeds in the final as it has been said from the start. I just hope now McNamara recruits better in the off season because we sure need to. We need a better fitness coach as the fitness in the team is shocking now and has been all season

Once again the video ref and Klein conspire to rob the bulls. Two perfectly good tries ruled out that even Stevo thought were tries. I truly believed that the bulls were the better team but lacked that bit of creativity that wigan had. Jeffries was poor and with Deacon off creativity was going to be minimum.
Big rap to the lads, they tried but I thought the rub of the green definately went wigans way but I can't see them reaching the final.

Bulls tried hard but once again a mixture of decisions against us and a real lack of class in key areas stood out. A classy halfback of Barrets stature and two really classy Centres are a must for next term.
I hope we don't have to write off next season too as part of the rebuilding process. At this moment I feel very deflated.

Again the officials have a say in the outcome but we lacked class in key areas and it showed tonight. Lynch was immense, he surely deserves an England call up. Hock really changed the game when he came on and combined with Feka's runs took the game away.

A disappointing end to the season but we didn't deserve to go too far in the play-offs based upon the season as a whole.

Here's to next year and hoping more signings are to be announced soon.

The video ref got the call right it was a knock on. All you have to do is look where Tadulala initially touched the ball then look where it landed it was 2 metres forward thus a knock on.

McNamara once again tinkers with the team to much and ****s it up again.

Solomona is complete and utter ****!!

He should never have been selected.

The game was an abstract for the Bulls' matches this season - a promising start but faded badly. I thought Mr MacNamara was maturing as a coach but his pre-match "Something special is going to happen" and his post-match rant at the referees seemed less than considered. As I didn't expect the side to make the top six, this match was a bonus. But, I don't believe the promise of success "somewhere over the rainbow" will be sufficient to keep the fans rolling through the turnstiles at Odsal. Mr MacNamara has yet to win a big game during his tenure or produce a side that has given the inkling of the possibility of doing such. It's time to put up or shut up Macca, as I will be doing till next season. Bye.

i think soly played well was trying all the time to get the team moving in the rite directions he gave nero a couple of chances which he droped. I also think the bulls handled feka well he normaly makes alot more yards. Evens should have been kept to centre he is a strong player but lack in pace which is needed on the wing.

I woke this morning and guess what...I feel just as deflated as last night.

The Bulls have problems alright.
On the field they need a leader. Barrett organised that Wigan side and he kicked Bulls to death.

Off the field, what is going on?
Bulls have never been a popular side with officials, commentators or other clubs. Once again two tries taken from us. Semi knocked the ball backwards (it rolling forward afterwards doesn't matter) but Silverwood pretends it does.
Shaun McRae knew the rule and was baffled on TV.
Then the second try was knocked forward by a Wigan hand but not even referred to the v.ref.(not that it would have mattered)

In previous playoffs against Saints we have seen Withers 'finger tips' when Leon scored and Les's 'finger nail' when he scored both being given as knock-ons.

If anyone doubted the contribution Deacs gives to the side it was there for all to see. Fieldens late hit (not seen of course) put him out of the game and that's the point Bulls lost momentum.Deacs fitness is looking a real problem. If Bulls fail to sign a real quality halfback we can expect little more next season. We saw what Jefferies can (or can't) do and have great problems in the two halfback spots. We don't have real quality in the centres and unless Toupou recaptures his form, are without a right wing of note.

Okay thats another season over and I fear for the season ticket sales unless the Fans get some real inspiration from somewhere.

A new centre and minimum of 1 or even two good half backs required for next season as we have a pack to trouble any team but the lack of creativity in our half backs is why the bulls will not unlock many good defences.
Deacon and jefferies are ok but neither really stand out as outstanding creative players.
Wigans 6 and 7 tore us apart.

We could have played until midnight and not scored again as we dontg have good enough half backs.

Apart from the 2 definate 100% bulls scores from Nero and Lynch there was also the Calderwood try which was allowed even though his foot was clearly in touch. Why was Forshaw not pulled up for running in the line on numerous occasions either?

We cannot blame the ref and bonehead video ref for the defeat, Klein did not punish Fielden for taking out Deacs off the ball or the numerous high tackles later in the game from Wigan but he did award a penalty when Lynch brushed Barrett after he had kicked, inconsistent biased rubbish.

We started well but did not tie Barrett up as we should have done, BJ was rubbish and we need to replace him asap, Langley once again very poor and giving far too many penalties away.

Decent effort from Sol in first half and Platt did ok at FB, Lynch was superb yet again. Think we missed Wagga and his running from DH like Higham was doing and as Henderson did last week. Our kicking from hand was very poor and why we did not pick up on how effective the high kicks were from Barrett and copy them just shows once again very poor coaching.

At the end of the day we have not been good enough this year and to finish 5th after the bad injuries, shocking refereeing decisions and general poor luck is not too bad considering.

Macca and Hood need to get their heads together and find 1 or 2 quality half backs, a top second rower to replace Langley and centres with pace. Get shut of Langley, Jeffries and Nero and replace with players worthy of SL

The problems in our team are there and shouldn't be denied, but it is true and deeply galling that we are ill treated by video refs time and time and time again and it's just not fair.

Sorry Gumshoe, Macca is not to blame.( although he did sign Jefferies!!) We should have players with the ability to read the game and pass or kick as is required.
Barrett does not kick because Nobby tells him to, He reads a game and that is the quality of the man.
You can't expect Macca to coach mediocre players to play like Barrett. They've either got it or they haven't. Unfortunately our playmakers fall into the latter!

Simple as that.

Have to agree there Mickster me old fruit! But many coaches sign players who don't turn out. Trick is to replace them with better.
Lets hope Macca sees it that way??
